Guiding Principles for AI in Education
As schools start to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in more classrooms, it’s important to focus on people first. These guiding principles are here to help us use AI in ways that are ethical, fair, and meaningful for every learner.
Why Do Principles Matter?
AI is changing how we teach and learn, but we get to decide how it’s used. These five principles are a compass for making smart choices, setting expectations, and making sure AI supports all students. They aren’t strict rules—they’re ideas to reflect on and talk about as we move forward together.

1. Equity & Access
All students deserve a fair chance to use and benefit from AI tools. This means closing gaps in access, designing for different needs, and making sure no one is left out—no matter their background, ability, or how they learn.
2. Transparency
Everyone should know how AI tools work, what data they use, and how they make decisions. Being open and honest builds trust and helps teachers, students, and families make smart choices about using technology.
3. Human-Centered Learning
AI should make relationships, creativity, and critical thinking stronger—not replace them. Keeping humans at the center makes learning social, meaningful, and connected.
4. Shared Responsibility
Using AI in a good way takes teamwork. Students, teachers, families, and technology creators all share the job of making choices and making sure AI is safe and helpful.

We want students to use AI wisely, safely, and with confidence. When students know how AI works and use it in smart ways, they’re better prepared for their future.
