Adaptive Physical Education (APE) is provided to students who have needs that cannot be appropriately addressed in the general physical education program. The provision of APE is based on the same process of referral, assessment, and individual program planning that other special education services follow. An assessment and evaluation of gross motor skill performance is considered by the IEP team.

An Ingham ISD Adaptive Physical Education teacher:

  • Completes comprehensive motor assessments of students with disabilities
  • Provides services to students who are eligible and in need of APE
  • Consults and collaborates with physical education personnel providing physical education instruction for students with disabilities
  • Serves as an IEP team member
  • Monitors student progress toward APE goals

The Adaptive PE Teacher may provide services for students to local school districts within the Ingham ISD service area. Services can be offered individually or in small groups and can be delivered directly or through consultation.

Wright's Law

Many students with disabilities can safely and successfully participate in general physical education, with or without accommodations and supports. However, some children benefit from specially designed or adapted physical education. Content in adapted physical education should mirror the general physical education curriculum to the greatest extent possible.
