AI for Families

Getting to know AI

AI powers tools that can tutor students, adapt reading materials, and surface learning patterns. Think of it as software that learns from examples and offers personalized practice or feedback. While AI can boost learning, it also raises questions about privacy, bias, and how we balance technology with human connection.

Talking with Your Child

Help them start a conversation by asking questions such as:

  • “What AI tools do you use in class or at home? How do they help you learn?”
  • “Have you ever noticed AI make a mistake? How did you know?”
  • “What do you think is fair or unfair about a computer grade or suggestion?”
  • “How do you feel about sharing your work with an algorithm?”

Digital Safety & Privacy

Keep your child safe online by:

  • Review school guidelines. Ask your district how they protect student data and what policies govern AI use.
  • Set home boundaries. Agree on which AI apps are OK to use and when you’ll check in on their work.
  • Protect personal information. Remind your child never to share full names, addresses, or passwords with AI tools.
  • Watch for bias. Talk about how AI learns from past data and why that can sometimes lead to unfair or incorrect suggestions.
