What If We Start by Listening?

Ingham ISD kicks off the 2026–27 school year by putting student voice at the center of what comes next.

A new school year often begins with plans.

New goals. New ideas. New opportunities to think about what could be different—and what could be better.

For Ingham ISD staff, the 2026–27 school year began with a question:

What if?

Staff from across the district came together for Opening Day to kick off another year of learning, connection and possibility. This year marks the second year of Ingham ISD’s "Power of What If?" theme, with a particular focus for the year ahead: student voice.

Rather than simply asking what educators believe students need, the district is creating opportunities to hear directly from the students they serve.

Starting the Year Together

Superintendent Jason Mellema opened the day, followed by CJ from WCJR Weather and a message from educator and disability advocate Jordyn Zimmerman.

Together, the speakers helped set the stage for a year centered on possibility, inclusion and meaningful learning experiences.

But some of the most important voices of the day belonged to the students themselves.

A Wilson Talent Center student panel gave staff the opportunity to hear directly from students about their experiences, perspectives and ideas.

It was a fitting way to begin a year focused on student voice: not simply talking about students, but making space to listen to them.

From “What If?” to “What Do You Think?”

The Power of What If? invites educators to imagine possibilities.

What if there were another way?

What if we tried something different?

What if an idea that seems impossible today could become tomorrow’s opportunity?

Adding student voice to that conversation introduces another important question:

What do you think?

Students experience education from a perspective no adult can fully replicate. Their voices can help educators better understand what connects, what creates barriers and what makes learning meaningful.

That doesn’t mean students are expected to have all the answers. It means their experiences are valuable information as educators continue shaping the environments and opportunities designed for them.

A Year Built Around Possibility

Opening Day brought Ingham ISD staff together before another busy school year begins, but it also served as a reminder of who sits at the center of that work.

Throughout 2026–27, Ingham ISD will continue exploring the Power of What If? with student voice helping shape the conversation.

Because sometimes the next great idea starts with imagining what could be.

And sometimes it starts by asking a student—and listening to what they have to say.
