Safety Response Protocol (SRP)
Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, and in accordance with Michigan state law, Ingham Intermediate School District will utilize the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) terminology for school emergencies.
Developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation, the SRP uses clear, common language to explain five specific actions that can be taken during an emergency.
The shift to the SRP aligns the actions and language we use during emergencies with all other school districts in our state as well as law enforcement, making it easier for first responders to understand the type and status of the emergency, resulting in better communication and quicker action.
The five actions in the SRP are:
HOLD - In your room or area. Clear the halls.
During “hold”, clear the hallways and remain in the classroom or area until the “all clear” is announced, close and lock doors. Teaching and learning continue as usual.
SECURE - Get inside. Lock outside doors.
During “secure”, return to the inside of building, lock outside doors. Teaching and learning continue as usual, increase situational awareness.
LOCKDOWN – Apply ALICE protocols.
If it is safer to exit the building, they will do so. If not, they will lock the door, turn off the lights and get students out of sight. They should also barricade the door if staying in room.
EVACUATE - (A location may be specified)
During “evacuate”, leave student belongings behind, bring phones if possible, students follow staff instructions for evacuation location.
SHELTER - Hazard and safety strategy.
During “shelter”, use appropriate safety strategy for the type of emergency and follow staff instructions.
During safety drills, staff and students will utilize the SRP in order to practice what to do in each of the situations. By practicing each action in SRP, staff and students build muscle memory and become more comfortable with plans and actions so they can react quickly in the event of an actual emergency.
Ingham ISD will also continue to use ALICE Training, a proactive, options-based active shooter response program for intruder situations. Standing for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate, teachers will determine the best course of action in an active intruder situation. If they are informed that the intruder is located in an area of the building that is far from their classroom, the teacher and students will evacuate the building to safety rather than locking down in the classroom and remaining in the building with the intruder.
