Wilson Talent Center Students Put Cybersecurity Skills to the Test in National Competition

Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics students tackle real-world digital challenges in the first round of CyberPatriot 19.

The next generation of cybersecurity professionals is getting a firsthand look at what it takes to protect digital systems, and Wilson Talent Center students are rising to the challenge.

On Friday, October 23, students in Wilson Talent Center's Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics program participated virtually in the first round of CyberPatriot 19, a national competition designed to introduce students to cybersecurity careers while strengthening their technical and critical-thinking skills.

Created by the Air & Space Forces Association, CyberPatriot is the nation's flagship youth cyber education program. At the center of the initiative is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, which challenges teams of students to step into the roles of newly hired IT professionals.

Working within simulated business environments, students are tasked with identifying and correcting cybersecurity vulnerabilities in virtual operating systems, including Windows and Linux/Ubuntu. Their mission is to strengthen system security while keeping essential network services operational for a fictional company.

The competition requires more than technical knowledge. Students must analyze complex problems, collaborate with teammates, make informed decisions and apply their classroom learning in situations that mirror challenges faced by cybersecurity professionals.

Experiences like CyberPatriot give students an opportunity to explore career possibilities in cybersecurity and other STEM fields while developing skills that extend well beyond the classroom.

As Wilson Talent Center's teams continue through the competition, they're gaining valuable experience in a rapidly evolving field where protecting digital information and infrastructure is increasingly important.

Congratulations to these students for taking on the challenge, and best of luck in the upcoming rounds of CyberPatriot 19!
