What Questions Should I Be Asking My Child’s Teachers?
It is important to have open and honest conversations with your child's teacher. Try to work in a conversation format in which you ask a few questions to get the conversation started and build on what the teacher asks you. Below are basic questions you could ask regardless of your child's age.
questions to help you get started
- What would you expect my child to have learned by this point in the school year, and has he learned it?
- What are my child's skills in comparison to other children in the class?
- How can you tell if my child is making enough progress to reach the next set of skills?
- What test results and work samples can you share with me that show my child's learning needs?
- What do these results tell us about what we can do to help my child improve?
- What things does my child do well? What is my child struggling with?
- What can I do at home to help teach and reinforce the learning at school?
- How do you want me to communicate with you?

- What other resources are available to support my child?
- Who else should we meet with (reading specialist, interventionist, classroom assistant) for more one-on-one time?
- What are possible next steps?
