Effective Procedures for Teaching Expository Writing
This course draws from Michigan’s standards and expectations as a guide for developing instructional units that prepare students to write well in non-fiction genres. The expository writing techniques will be consistent with the requirements of higher education, the workplace, and future entrance and exit assessments (i.e., ACT, SAT, AP, MEAP). Companion texts for this course are Writing on Demand and Image Grammar. This course will be taught by Carmen Dykema, Holt Public Schools ELA curriculum consultant.

The course meets at Ingham ISD on Nov. 16, Dec. 6, Jan. 9, Feb. 7, 26, March 1, and 21.

International Book Club-LATTICE Sept. 7, 2007-May 15, 2008Monthly book club meetings occur to discuss international children’s literature. International LATTICE members and teachers participate in discussions to provide insight into the accuracy of books about their countries while all members discuss how a particular book might be used in the classroom. LATTICE, Linking All Types of Teachers for International, Cross-cultural Education, is an organization of American educators and international graduate students who seek to gain knowledge, promote understanding, and overcome stereotypes to improve the world for children. This book club meets once a month on Thursdays from 4:15-6:00 at the East Lansing Public Library. The dates for 2006-2007 are: Oct. 19, Nov. 16, Jan. 18, Feb. 15, March 15, April 12, and May 3. LIFT for Secondary Teachers of Struggling Readers Grades 6-12 (LIFT SSR 6-12) January 13-April 28 2009 Tuesdays, 8 full day sessions
Literacy Frameworks for Secondary Teachers of Struggling Readers (LIFT SSR) is for teachers who work with struggling readers in middle and high school. This program will enable teachers to observe and assess students, as well as plan and implement a balanced literacy program to accelerate progress in reading and writing. Both small group and tutorial methods are used.

Supporting Secondary Readers November 29, 2007
Participants will learn how to incorporate quality standards-based curriculum whil ensuring sucess for the full spectrum of learners.  Jay McTigue and Carol An Tomlinson, co-authors of the book Integrating Differentiated Instruction and Understanding by Design: Conntecting Content and Kids, will share how to use principles of sound curriculum design and differentiated instruction together to create lesson plans that teach essential knowledge and skills appropriate to all students.  The critical role of assessment in curriculum design and differentiation will be examined in the context of the complementary roles each play in supporting quality learning.

English Language Arts Network August 22, 2007 - April 16, 2008
This on-going professional learning community is for K-12 teachers who have building and district level responsibilities for literacy.  Representatives from Special Education and other related content areas are welcomed and encouraged.  Network members will share information about literacy and serve as a liaison between Ingham ISD and their own districts.  ELAN will provide space for teachers to collaborate with and support each other.  Facilitator: Amy Kilbridge.
