Reading Recovery® : Initial Training Course

Assessment Training August 18-29, 2008; Sessions Thursdays Sept. 4, 2008 - June 4, 2009

Reading Recovery teachers participate in a year of weekly masters-level classes for which they receive university credit, while they are serving as Reading Recovery teachers in their home schools. During the training year, teacher trainees observe one another teaching and are observed in their own schools by highly-trained teacher leaders. Through coaching and through individual and group discussion, teachers develop a profound understanding of the reading and writing process and gain increasing skill in specific Reading Recovery teaching procedures. Careful observation, assessment, and individualized teaching are stressed. Teacher trainees learn to build on the emerging literacy skills of each individual learner in order to develop strategic readers and writers. This initial year is a first step in the sustained, ongoing professional development all Reading Recovery teachers receive from specially trained teacher leaders as long as they remain in Reading Recovery. (See below.)

Reading Recovery ® Ongoing Professional Development, for Reading Recovery trained teachers: September 5, 2008 - June 2, 2009
Reading Recovery® Ongoing Professional Development provides ongoing training for active Reading Recovery ® teachers. Each teacher attends ten sessions led by a highly trained teacher leader, four of which include observation of Reading Recovery® lessons behind a one-way glass, followed by discussion of literacy theory and current research as related to the lesson observed. Teacher leaders also make school coaching visits to each trained Reading Recovery® teacher and are available to consult with school personnel on program implementation issues. Attendance at the Michigan Reading Recovery Institute is required for Reading Recovery® teachers.

NEW! Literacy Lessons - Reading Recovery Training Model for Special Education Teachers
August 18, 2008-May 21, 2009 Thursday afternoons

Special Education teachers are invited to participate in the Reading Recovery training through this pilot model from Oakland University.  In schools with full implementation of Reading Recovery, a special education teacher may teach two grade one general education children individually each day over the year. Concurrently, they participate in the Reading Recovery training group and learn about the acquisition phase of literacy. The special education teacher enrolls in 8 graduate credits in literacy processing theory at Oakland University. They are not certificated as a Reading Recovery teacher unless they elect to complete a second year of training, enrolling in two graduate credits and teaching four children daily. For more information, please contact the Reading Recovery Teacher Leader, Dorothy Best at dbest@inghamisd.org Note: 8 partial scholarships are available for Ingham Special educators
