The Art & Craft of Writing

This series of six workshops designed to support teachers who are currently implementing the Writer's Workshop model as presented by Lucy Calkins. This series will revisit the establishment of a writing workshop environment. It is recommended that participants complete LIFT K-3, Part II prior to attending this series. Participants will need to provide their own sets of Lucy Calkins' "Units of Study for Primary Writing: A Year long Curriculum". Presenter: Laura Ranville

 DIBELS: Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills

The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) is a screening assessment for use with K-3 students. The DIBELS assessment is included as Module 8 of the Foundations: LETRS© training. This series will cover: 1) models of assessment; screening, outcome, progress monitoring, and diagnostic: 2) overview of the administration and scoring of the DIBELS assessment; and 3) interpreting and using DIBELS data.

Foundations: LETRS ©

Foundations: LETRS© introduces the five essential components of reading required by Reading First: fluency, phonics, vocabulary, phonemic awareness, and comprehension. Also included in the content is writing and assessment for early intervention. Teachers should be prepared to dig deeper into their understanding of literacy instruction in order to make enhanced teaching decisions.

Instructional Inteventions: Classroom Management K-3

Classroom management is one of the biggest challenges a teacher faces in differentiating instruction to meet the learning needs of all their students. Classroom management is very personal; however, classrooms that are organized with focused activities and well established routines are beneficial to the learning of all children. These five sessions will explore ways to organize classrooms for a comprehensive literacy model. Presenter:

LIFT K-3: Observing Young Readers and Writers to Inform Instruction is a two-semester course for K-3 classroom teachers organized around Reading First's Three Tier Model of Instruction. The course content focuses on Tier I (good first classroom teaching for all children) and Tier II (differentiation of instruction, guided by assessment data, in small groups and one-on-one). Semester Two will use Units of Study for Primary Writing by Lucy Calkins. Classroom management and other associated topics will be woven throughout. This course includes seven of the nine Foundations: LETRS© modules and results in partial Foundations: LETRS© certification. Note: This class is a two-semester sequence. Pre-requisite: New teachers should have completed Teacher Reading Academy +. Presenter(s): Ann Castle and Lori Watrich

 MLPP K-3

The Michigan Literacy Progress Profile (MLPP) K-3 is an important part of the Reading Plan for Michigan, a plan to enable all Michigan children to read well and independently by the end of third grade. MLPP K-3 is a set of literacy assessment tools generally administered individually to children from preschool through third grade. Teachers can use this assessment information to plan for literacy instruction. A brief overview of Reading & Writing To/With/By will be provided. Presenter: Ramona Berkey

 New Teacher Trainings:
Effective Teacher-Parent Communication

In an effort to help all students succeed in school, teachers must be able to communicate effectively with parents. In this session participants will: review methods of communication available and their appropriate applications, understand the Do's and Don'ts of communicating with parents, and understand what research says about effective and ineffective communication and its impact on learning. Teacher resources such as newsletters, homework assignments, and protocols for phone conversations and conferences will be provided. Participants will leave this session having developed a communication plan for the school year. This session is based on the belief that involving parents in the education of their children results in increased student performance at all grade levels, regardless of educational or socioeconomic background. Facilitators: Amy Kilbridge, Ingham ISD English Language Arts consultant, and Barb Michelutti, Ingham ISD Career Preparation Specialist.

Responsibilities and Resources to Serve ALL of Our Students

Teachers have moral, legal and professional requirements they must understand in order to identify appropriate resources to help every student achieve. Understanding the legal requirements that govern educating special education students can be daunting. This workshop will explain the acronyms and the expectations. The Individual Education Plan and the classroom teacher's obligation to implement that plan will be described. A framework for identifying the strengths and needs of individual students and the resources available to meet the needs of students will be provided. Facilitators: Jeanne Tomlinson, Ingham ISD special education services consultant and Kris Chapman, East Lansing special education director.

REMC 13 Resources

As a new teacher it is helpful to know about the resources that enliven teaching practices,knowledge, and skills. The Regional Education Media Center that serves Ingham ISD constituent districts has a Teacher's Workshop with die cutters, laminators, poster printers and button makers. The Media Center also has an instruction materials connection for loan, subscriptions to and training for Blackboard (an online resource to post syllabi and assignments, archive documents, create surveys), subscription services to research sites with full-text articles, online professional development, and a myriad of links to education websites. This workshop will acquaint new teachers with resources to create a rich learning environment for students. Facilitator: Melissa White, Ingham ISD media specialist.

Teacher Reading Academy + K-3

This eight-session series is specifically designed for K-3 teachers who are beginning teachers. The five essential components of reading and writing will be covered. Additionally, aspects of physically organizing the classroom, classroom management, grouping students, selecting reading materials, and reading and writing to, with, and by children will be covered. Note: It highly recommended that teachers who have not yet taken the Michigan Literacy Progress Profile (MLPP) K-3 should consider enrolling in the Fall 2008 class. An MLPP K-3 class begins on September 18 which participants could take concurrently. All new teachers should take this class before taking LIFT K-3 Part I & II. Presenter: Ramona Berkey
