Q: Where did the LAMP idea come from?
UAW and GM saw the need for future manufacturing workers and wanted to create a program to begin educating students who are interested in manufacturing careers. Because they are also very interested in helping public education, they approached Ingham ISD to partner and create the program.
Q: What types of students do you look for to enter the program?
Any self-motivated student who is interested in exploring the world of manufacturing.
Q: What is the largest difference between the LAMP classroom and a typical classroom?
Everything we do is in teams; students work in teams for each unit. Also, we use the plants as our "laboratory." Another key difference is that this is a professional setting; we really concentrate on employability skills. Students are not graded on a typical grading scale; they must reach a quality standard.
Q: Is the LAMP program offered in other locations?
There is another program sponsored by the UAW, General Motors, and Detroit Public Schools in Detroit called Detroit Manufacturing Partnership (DMP). We use the same curriculum, and they are partnered with the Hamtramck Plant.
Q: What philosophy is the LAMP program based on?
LAMP's curriculum and teaching styles and strategies are based on W. Edwards Deming and David Langford.
