Heartwood School offers programs for elementary, middle and high school age children as well as vocational programs for older students. At the elementary level students learn and practice basic life skills and have opportunities to be part of a group setting. The children engage in play and individual learning experiences that will provide the foundation for them to achieve. More emphasis is placed on personal care, participation in group settings and completing activities of daily living. Activities are designed to enhance fine and gross motor skills that are necessary for achieving educational outcomes.

When children reach middle school age they begin to get involved in prevocational tasks such as staying seated, finishing an assignment, and moving toward more independent functioning in the basic skill areas. This is in preparation for the kinds of vocational tasks that will be available, as they become older. Students may begin to work at a particular production task once a week in order to familiarize them with this type of work activity. Expectations are greater and students begin to assume more responsibility for their work in the classroom.

Secondary and adult programs are designed to ensure that all learners are prepared for the work place of the future and are productive and participating members of the community. Students learn about the features of their towns by participating in a variety of community experiences. In addition, students are provided the opportunity to participate in four types of vocational programs:

Vocational Preparation Programs

Career Explorations Program (CEP)
Life Skills Program (LSP)
Production and Evaluation Program (PEP)
