International Book Club - LATTICE

LATTICE, Linking All Types of Teachers for International, Cross-cultural Education, is an organization of American educators and international graduate students who seek to gain knowledge, promote understanding, and overcome stereotypes to improve the world for children. International LATTICE members participate in discussions to provide insight into the accuracy of books about their countries, while all members discuss how a particular book might be used in the classroom. This book club meets once a month to discuss international literature for children and adolescents. Titles are available at latticeworld.org. Members purchase their own books and register for the entire year.

Social Studies High School Content Expectations
This workshop will engage teachers and curriculum leaders in a review of the new high school content expectations (HSCEs) for social studies. Participants will become familiar with the HSCEs and have opportunities to dialog with colleagues concerning implications for content, teaching, and assessment. Carmela D'Alessandro, Ingham ISD Social Studies Consultant, will facilitate this session. Note: The availability of HSCEs for social studies is determined by action at the State level. Should HSCEs not be approved by this date, the workshop will be rescheduled.

Social Studies Grade Level Content Expectations

This workshop will engage teachers and curriculum leaders in a review of the K-8 Social Studies Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs). Participants will become familiar with the GLCEs and have opportunities to dialog with colleagues concerning implications for content, teaching, and assessment. Note: The availability of the social studies GLCEs is determined by action at the State level. If approval of the GLCEs is not completed by this date, the workshop will be rescheduled.

Rigor in the Social Studies Classroom

Rigor, relevancy, and relationships have defined the recent high school redesign efforts in Michigan. Participants will have opportunities to dialog with colleagues and define a process for practical applications of rigorous curriculum within the social studies classroom. Ingham ISD's "Redefining Rigor" and the rigor and relevancy framework developed by the International Center for Leadership in Education will be utilized. Facilitator: Carmela D'Alessandro, Social Studies Consultant, Ingham ISD.

Internationalizing the Classroom

This workshop will help participants structure literacy discussions around cross-cultural awareness and multiple perspectives. Utilizing the book club model created by LATTICE (Linking All Types of Teachers for International, Cross-cultural Education), participants will develop awareness of diverse resources to internationalize the classroom.

Using Primary Sources in the History Classroom

Primary sources are an indispensable part of the history curriculum. Path to the Present, a Teaching American History Project, shows teachers how to mine the web for video and sound files, images, and rare archival materials not found in standard textbooks. Participants will observe local teachers as they present model lessons using primary source materials that enrich instruction. Presenters will utilize materials and strategies generated from a recent training developed and funded by local, state, and federal partners. Faculty from Michigan State University will be available to offer advice on using these valuable resources. Dr. Lisa Fine, MSU History Professor, will facilitate.

Basics of Student Savings and Investing Workshop for Educators

The Michigan Core Curriculum Framework contains a strong Personal Finance Education Standard. Opportunities abound for integrating components of personal finance education, such as saving and investing, within existing curricula over a wide range of subjects including economics, math, social studies, family and consumer services, and business education. Personal Finance Education Services, Inc. (PFES) in collaboration with the Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Services (OFIS), Investor Protection Trust (IPT) and Ingham Intermediate School District are pleased to present this non-commercial professional development workshop for classroom teachers in grades 7-12. Saving and investing are key components of personal finance education. Tips and strategies will be presented for teaching investor education and protection in your classroom using The Basics of Saving and Investing: Investor Education 2020, a teaching guide developed by IPT for educators. Participants will receive a free copy of the guide and other resources for use in their classrooms.
