High School Content Expectations (HSCEs)

Download Overview of the mathematics High School Content Expectations, new graduation requirements, and possible course sequences

MDE Revised FAQ Questions about the high school graduation requirements and content expectations are answered in this document from Michigan Department of Education.

Revised Algebra I HSCEs in Word The Algebra I High School Content Expectations were revised slightly in Aug. 2007. This revised list is in Word so you can use it for curriculum planning.

Download The Algebra 1 HSCEs are extensive and require more time than one full year for most students. This chart shows the overlap of middle school Algebra GLCEs with the HSCEs for Algebra 1. If a district teaches the 8th grade Algebra GLCEs thoroughly, they will have accomplished a significant portion of the Algebra 1 HSCEs. Then Algebra 1 in 9th grade can begin with a short review, and move ahead quickly to cover the more extensive aspects of the Algebra 1 curriculum.

You can obtain copies of the HSCEs and tools for aligning your curriculum at the MDE Mathematics HSCE website. Copies of the middle school Grade Level Content Expectations are at the MDE Mathematics website: http://michigan.gov/mathematics. Look in the upper left corner under Curriculum and Instruction.

CBR2’s – Calculator-based Rangers (motion detectors) can be borrowed from Theron Blakeslee's office for a two-week period of time. Their instruction manual has nice suggestions for classroom activities. It comes with the CBR's, or you can get it from http://education.ti.com. This site has lots of great downloads.

The Virtual Mathematics Academy (VMA) is a free, online professional development opportunity for mathematics educators. Using an interactive, non-linear, self-directed and self-paced approach, you can learn strategies to improve your classroom instruction. The VMA currently features two sections: Algebra
http://teacherline.pbs.org/teacherline/academy/virtual.cfm#algebra#algebra
and Principles
http://teacherline.pbs.org/teacherline/academy/virtual.cfm#principles#principles.
In the algebra academy you can select any one of four grade bands (K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12) on which to focus your professional learning experience. Readings, video mini-lectures, reflective questions complete with response boxes, java applets, video clips of actual classroom
lessons in action, and viewing and analyzing student work makes this a complete interactive experience. Make sure you click on the Representation, Modeling and Analyzing Change links in the left-hand frame or you’ll miss 80% of the academy instruction.
