Cognitively Guided Instruction (Teaching Mathematics to Young Children)
“Children in CGI classes learn mathematics with understanding through problem solving. Both word problems and symbolic problems are the vehicles through which children learn mathematical concepts and skills. Although teachers choose problems so that they will enhance children’s development, in most cases, teachers do not provide explicit instruction on problem-solving strategies. Instead children develop their own problem-solving strategies, which become more efficient and abstract over time. Skills and number facts are learned in the process of problem solving and are thus learned with understanding rather than learned as isolated pieces of information.”
2007-2008 workshop series will be conducted in two sections, K-1st Grade, and 2nd-3rd Grade. The K-1 section will meet 3 times. The 2-3 section will meet 4 times. Register on-line at www.inghamisd.org.

Middle School Mathematics Initiative
Ingham ISD is providing comprehensive middle school mathematics teaching and curriculum software to each middle school in the county. This software is delivered through smartboard technology. Implementation plans can be viewed here.
Classroom Assessment Project
Classroom assessment of students’ mathematical understanding is critical to improvement of teaching and learning. Classroom assessment has 3 phases: Selecting adequate assessment items, administering and scoring the assessments, and collaborative discussion about what students understand, based on the assessment results. Two types of items can provide insight into student achievement, both multiple choice items that are written to elicit student misconceptions, and short answer items that allow students to explain their thinking.
Assessment items aligned to the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectation are available at http://mathassessments.mscenters.org/.
The Classroom Performance System (CPS) blue clickers can be used to administer and score multiple choice assessments. Teachers can reserve a set of the blue clickers through REMC.
