Process

As a substitute teacher, it may be necessary for you to have a 150-day Substitute Teaching Permit. This is required if you do not have a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate. To qualify for this permit, you must have the equivalent of 90 semester hours of satisfactory college credits (minimum 2.0 grade point average) consolidated at one regionally accredited four-year college or university accepted by the State of Michigan or an expired Michigan teaching certificate.

Once you have worked for the first time each school year, the Michigan Department of Education will invoice you directly for the annual $45 fee for this permit. Please note that this fee is separate from the fee you must pay to have your fingerprints processed. Once you receive your invoice, you must pay the fee directly to the State of Michigan each year or you will be removed from the Capital Area Substitute System. Failure to remit payment for the sub permit is considered a voluntary termination of employment as a sub teacher.

You will be required to provide us with an official copy of your transcript or your expired Michigan Teacher Certificate to support the permit request.
