Register

To register as an intern for the Capital Area Substitute System, you will need to complete the following steps:

1. Obtain and complete a Substitute Packet. These packets may be dowloaded below* or picked up at Ingham ISD, Human Resources, 2630 West Howell Road, Mason, MI or at the Administration Building of any of the districts participating in the consortium. You must complete all of the forms in the Substitute Packet. These completed forms need to be brought to the CASS Department of Ingham ISD at the above address. It is not necessary for you to attend an orientation for the duration of your student teaching. Should you decide to continue on CASS after your internship is completed, you will need to attend an orientation session at that time.

2. You must be fingerprinted to obatin a criminal history search for state and federal activity. This is a law enforced requirement. Additional information is included in the substitute packet. Please note there is a fee of $55 for the fingerprinting process.

3. Unprofessional Conduct disclosure from your previous employer is required. We recommend that you bring your completed unprofessional conduct release form (last page of sub packet) with you to fingerprinting to expedite the hiring process.

4. Bring your Drivers License and Social Security Card to the Ingham ISD CASS Department when you drop off your paperwork. If you do not have a current, signed Social Security Card, please stop by the Social Security Office to request one. A printout obtained from the Social Security Office, at the time of the request, with your name and Social Security Number on it may be used instead of the actual card.

5. If you do not have a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate, it will be necessary for us to obtain a 150-day substitute teaching permit for you. To qualify for this permit, you must have the equivalent of 90 semester hours of satisfactory college credits (minimum 2.0 grade point average) consolidated at one regionally accredited four-year college or university accepted by the State of Michigan or an expired Michigan teaching certificate. The Michigan Department of Education will invoice you directly each school year for the annual $45 fee for this permit. Failure to remit payment for the sub permit is considered a voluntary termination of employment as a substitute teacher. Please provide us with an official copy of your transcript or expired Michigan Teacher certificate to support the permit request.
