Culinary Arts & Hospitality

Do you enjoy preparing good food for friends and family? Is your favorite TV channel the Food Network? Do you find yourself reading recipes in magazines or cookbooks for fun? If so, Culinary Arts & Hospitality is the course for you.

This one-year (with the option for a second year) program, is one that prepares individuals to provide professional chef and related cooking services in restaurants and other commercial food establishments.  It includes instruction in recipe and menu planning, preparing and cooking of foods, supervising and training kitchen assistants, the management of food supplies and kitchen resources, aesthetics of food presentation, and familiarity or mastery of a wide variety of cuisines and culinary techniques.

This course is open to juniors and seniors and is located at the Capital Area Career Center in Mason, MI

Culinary Arts Possible Career Fields

Students who enroll and successfully complete the Culinary Arts & Hospitality program have multiple career options.  They can begin working immediately upon graduation or they can choose to continue their education and training

  • Students participate in local, state and national culinary competitions such as ProStart, SkillsUSA and FCCLA
  • Students operate an on/off-site catering menu for the public
  • Hands-on culinary demonstrations/exams
  • Co-op and Paid work experience may be available    
  • Students will create a portfolio to showcase to colleagues and business owners
  • Unpaid work experience in local food service and hospitality businesses
  • Opportunities to work side-by-side with industry professionals from across the United States
