Board Responsibilities

Since the first official school board was created in Massachusetts in 1826, American society has benefited from the "citizen" trustees who represent the community at-large. As representatives of this public trust, school board members are charged with setting educational policies consistent with state and federal laws governing public education.

Board members translate the needs of students into policies, plans and goals that will create better tomorrows for today's learners. It is particularly true that actions taken by the trustees who serve on intermediate boards of education have far-reaching implications. The members of the Ingham Intermediate Board of Education develop and adopt policies which, in turn, guide the superintendent and district staff in providing quality educational services for learners throughout Ingham County.

In addition to these more global responsibilities, Ingham ISD's board members have the following duties:

Direct the Intermediate's vocational/technical, special and general education programs
Ratify fiscally sound budgets which balance educational needs with financial reality
Approve bond and/or millage issues
Oversee the maintenance and renovation of facilities
Confirm the hiring of teachers, administrators and support staff

Meetings of the Board

Regular Board of Education meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month. Special meetings are scheduled as needed on the first Tuesday of the month. Meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. in Thorburn Education Center's conference room. Notices of special meetings are advertised in the Lansing State Journal, in accordance with applicable state statute.

All meetings of the Board are open to the public except those specifically exempted by law. Closed sessions may be called to discuss certain personnel matters, student discipline, contract negotiations and for consultation with attorneys on pending litigation. No vote on any item may be taken in closed session.

A quorum of three board members is needed to conduct business. The superintendent and administrative staff are available at board meetings to provide reports and background information.

Minutes are recorded at each board meeting. These minutes are public record and, as such, are available to interested individuals.

Upcoming Board Meetings:

May 20, 2008
June 17, 2008 - Public Budget Hearing
July 15, 2008 - Organizational Meeting

All meetings begin at 7:30 p.m.

Also, you may express you concerns in writing. Each board member will receive a copy of your letter.
