Construction Student Heads to Nationals

Ryan Oberg, Williamston High School Senior, has earned his place in the national competition that takes place in Kansas City, June 20-25. Ryan spent two years at the Capital Area Career Center in the Construction program, where he has learned many aspects of building a home including blueprint reading, framing, exterior finishing, electrical and plumbing.

Precision Machine Students Display Skills at MITES

On May 6, students from across the state gathered at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste Marie to participate in the annual MITES (Michigan Industrial and Trade Education Society) precision machine technology competition.

Showcase Highlights Student Work

On May 20 from 12-7 p.m., nine programs at the Capital Area Career Center spent the day talking with guests about their work and accomplishments for the year. Over 450 people attended the event where they enjoyed free services such as hand massages from Cosmetology, vehicle safety inspections from Auto Tech and tasty creations from the Culinary Arts program.

Auto Tech Students Take MITES Competition by Storm

On April 30, over 90 students from throughout the state competed in the annual MITES (Michigan Industrial and Trade Education Society) Automotive Competition at Tuscola Area Technology Center in Caro, MI. Students participated in two hands-on competitions: 1.) Quick Service for high school juniors with six categories and 2.) an Auto Contest for high school seniors with eight categories. Three students from the Capital Area Career Center participated and placed very highly in the competitions.

Auto Tech Students Take 7th in Ford AAA Competition

Two Automotive Technology students, Sean Boyce (Stockbridge) and Travis Way (Mason) qualified and competed in the Ford AAA state competition on April 28th. They took 7th place in the state!

Students Demonstrate Skills in Year-End Showcase

On Thursday, May 20 from Noon-7:00 p.m., students from nine programs offered by the Capital Area Career Center, 611 Hagadorn Road in Mason will demonstrate what they learned in a Year-End Student Showcase. The goal of the event is to welcome the media, community members, prospective students, parents and businesses to see the unique educational experiences that are taking place at the Career Center and how students are taking charge of their own future.

BPA Students Compete at Nationals

New Media Student Presses on to State Competition

An added benefit of being involved in Career and Technical programs is that students are able to compete against their peers in regional, state and national competitions. Each year students work on their technical abilities and how to express their creativity by participating in various SkillsUSA competitions. Kristin Lindsay from Leslie School District placed 3rd in the photography competition and will advance to the state competition.

Health Care Students Qualify for State Competition

2,200 Eighth Graders Explore Career and Technical Education

Career and Technical Education is Changing with the Times

Marie Anderson, a senior in Mason Public Schools, attends the Capital Area Career Center to take control of her life after high school. Marie is in the Medical Technology Careers program and plans to be a doctor. She is learning many aspects of the medical field while still in high school and expects to be a certified phlebotomist when the program is over to help pay for college.

Business Professional Students Press on to State Competition

On January 15 at Baker College in Owosso, students from Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Livingston and Shiawassee counties gathered for the Region 9 Business Professionals of America (BPA) student competition. The Career Center showed outstanding results with 83% of students placing in the top ten and 71% placing in the top five.

State Superintendent Mike Flanagan Visits CACC

Culinary Arts Student Sets Future Plans In Motion

Rickelle Lynn Cousino, a culinary arts student at the Capital Area Career Center and high school senior in Mason, is serious about her future plans. After spending her junior year in the Career Center's culinary arts program, Rickelle took her learning experiences to another level by attending a summer baking camp at Johnson and Wales in Miami, Florida. Johnson and Wales is well known throughout the country for their culinary arts programs, and this was a unique opportunity for Rickelle to spend time with collegiate professionals to get a real feel for this career field.

New CAD and Design Program Planned to Meet Student and Indus

For several years the Capital Area Career Center has offered a Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) and Design program that focused primarily in the mechanical field, with a broad overview in several other areas. Due to industry and student demand, the program is being redesigned for the 2010-11 school year. Instead of having a single two-year program, CAD and Design will now offer two one-year programs: one in mechanical drafting and one in architecture.
